From the streets of the Bronx — to the world - Hip-Hop is forever

Turning 50 this year, hip-hop originated in the South Bronx in the early 70s. DJs at ‌‌neighborhood block parties would use turntables to loop the drum breaks from funk records to create hype on the dancefloor. They noticed that the crowd became more energized during these song sections and invented a way of extending these drum parts that later became known as breakbeats.

Early hip-hop pioneers invented new ways of sampling soul, funk, and jazz records in living rooms and would turn those samples into hip-hop break beats. The DJs would then bring those beats to the block parties, with an MC (master of ceremonies) beside them to hype up the crowd even further. These MCs would later become known as rappers. This classic, original hip-hop style is characterized by fun and positive rap lyrics, fast breakbeats (around 85-92 BPM), jazz samples, and funky bass lines for a sonic experience unlike any other.

The style broke into the mainstream by the late ‘70s and rose to prominence in the early 90s with the rise of gangster rap..” Now, iterations of this musical style are a mainstay in the music world, from LoFi to Trap to Drill.
