Every two weeks, Soundtrap hosts a Sample Pack Challenge on the Soundtrap Discord server. Users get a chance to flip the latest samples from the latest release in the Soundtrap audio library. This week, it was the Illegal Rage Trap Pack that’s been turning heads.

The challenge brought out some incredible talent as always, but one track in particular stood out to the Soundtrap Staff.

ChemicalHorizons bacame this week's staff pick with his incredible submission and creative take on the sample pack. We caught up with ChemicalHorizons to learn more about his journey, his creative process, and what this win means to him.

Listen to his submission below:

Tell us who you are in one sentence!

An aspiring music producer who has big dreams and wants to share a story without words.

Where are you from and how old are you?

I'm from Morganton North Carolina and I'm 22 years old.

How long have you been making music and what got you started?

I've been messing with different software and music programs for about 5 years. And believe it or not, Learning how to play piano got me started.

What was your initial reaction when you heard the sample pack? Did any particular loop or sound jump out at you?

I gotta say, when I first heard the sample pack I couldn't stop listening to the preview song. The synths in particular are probably some of my favorites yet.

Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you approach working with the samples?

My first objective when figuring out what to use and what goes well is to listen to each individual sample and try to match them together. I typically start with the melodies since that's what I tend to base the rest of the song around, then layer drums and FX as needed around the core.

Did you have a specific vibe or theme in mind for your track, or did it evolve naturally?

Honestly? I was winging it the entire way through. It's something of a style per se, I just let the music flow in whatever direction it takes me.

How would you describe your unique sound as an artist? Did this challenge push you to explore new styles?

I pride myself on the fact that my style can be as unpredictable and wide ranged as my music taste. Interestingly enough, this pack fit right into one of my favorite genres so I had a field day when mixing my submission.

What's your go-to snack or drink while you're in the middle of a creative session?

Any kind of sour candy. Preferably Sour patch kids.

Who or what inspires you musically? Did any of that inspiration make its way into your submission?

Inspiration comes at me like a freight train whenever it decides to show up, I don't have a single particular thing or person that inspires me, I just let the ideas come at me how they will.

If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I'd say Hyper Potions. Their work basically kickstarted my love for doing anything music related.

What makes a track stand out in a challenge like this? What advice would you give future participants?

Now that you’ve won the challenge, what’s next? Are there any projects you're excited about?

I'm just taking things one step at a time, I'm definitely looking forward to future challenges however.

If your winning track was the soundtrack to a movie, what kind of scene would it accompany?

I think my track would probably find itself near the ending in the background, with some sort of monologue going on about something random like "the moral of the story here is"

Where can people listen to your music and find you online?

On my Youtube channel

We again congratulate ChemicalHorizons on becoming this week's staff pick and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
